SSide Yard
Between residential properties the standard maximum is 4 ft. Up to 6 ft can be approved by the Planning Commission. A solid privacy fence in a residential zone requires Zoning Board of Appeals approval. The fence must sit 1 in. inside your lot line, and at least 12 in. from any sidewalk edge.
BBackyard
Same 4 ft standard between residences, with Planning Commission approval possible up to 6 ft. Where your lot backs up to a commercial alley, expressway, drainage ditch, or railroad, a solid fence is permitted.

Setback Requirements
Fences must be placed 1 in. inside your lot line — not on it — and at least 12 in. off any sidewalk. Nothing may be placed in a public right-of-way, alley, or easement.
