Chain link and aluminum are the two most common "see-through" fencing options in Michigan. They look nothing alike, but they solve a lot of the same problems — containing pets, defining property lines, and enclosing yards without blocking the view. Here's how they really compare.
Upfront cost
Chain link is the most affordable permanent fence you can install. Aluminum runs roughly 2–3x the material cost of galvanized chain link, and slightly more than that for high-end powder-coated styles. That said, we always encourage homeowners to look at the 20-year cost, not the sticker price.
Curb appeal
This is where aluminum runs away with it. Powder-coated black aluminum reads as decorative, almost wrought-iron style, and it dramatically increases perceived home value in neighborhoods like Northville, Plymouth, and Grosse Ile. Chain link, even in black vinyl-coated form, still reads as utilitarian to most buyers.
That said, black vinyl-coated chain link with landscaping in front of it can nearly disappear — a great trick for dog owners who want a big yard enclosed without an eyesore.
Durability in Michigan weather
Chain link
Galvanized chain link routinely lasts 20+ years in our climate. The weak points are rust at the bottom rail (from snow contact) and the tension bands. Vinyl-coated versions last even longer because the coating protects the zinc.
Aluminum
Doesn't rust — ever. Quality powder-coated aluminum easily lasts 30+ years and typically carries a lifetime warranty. It's the right choice near the water (Downriver, Grosse Pointe, Lake St. Clair) where humidity kills iron fast.
Maintenance
Both are close to zero-maintenance. Occasional hose-down for aluminum, occasional tightening of the top rail on chain link. Neither needs paint or stain.
Pet containment
Both work. Chain link is more forgiving if a dog jumps into the fence, and it doesn't have pickets that a determined dog could get a paw stuck between. For most Michigan pet owners, chain link is the practical winner here.
Pool code compliance
Aluminum wins easily. Chain link can technically meet Michigan pool code with the right slat spacing and a proper self-latching gate, but aluminum is designed for it out of the box.
Resale value
Real estate agents across Metro Detroit consistently tell us aluminum front-yard fencing adds visible resale value; chain link doesn't. In the backyard, the difference shrinks — most buyers only care that there's a functioning fence.
