A lot of homeowners have never had a fence installed before, and it's fair to want to know exactly what you're signing up for. Here's the honest, step-by-step process we follow on every Prime Fence project — from the first phone call to the final walkthrough.
Step 1: The free estimate
It starts with a phone call, text, or online form. We'll ask a few questions about your goals — privacy, security, pets, pool, curb appeal — and then either come out to measure or, in many cases, do a remote measurement using satellite tools. Either way, you get a written estimate with clear line items. No pressure, no hard close.
Step 2: Choosing materials
Once you like the number, we'll walk you through material options: vinyl, wood, aluminum, chain link, composite. We'll show you samples, talk through color choices, and help you match the fence to your home's style. In Michigan, we also talk about frost-line depth, wind exposure, and any HOA rules for your neighborhood.
Step 3: Permits and MISS DIG
Before we dig anything, two things happen:
- We pull the permit. Most Metro Detroit and Downriver cities require a fence permit, and we handle the entire application for you.
- We call MISS DIG 811. Michigan law requires locating all underground utilities before any digging. This is free and takes about three business days.
Skipping either step is illegal and dangerous — if a contractor tells you they don't need to do this, walk away.
Step 4: Installation day
Most residential fences take 1–3 days depending on length and material. Here's what happens:
- We chalk the fence line and confirm placement with you.
- Post holes are dug to at least 42 inches — below the Michigan frost line.
- Posts are set in concrete and allowed to cure.
- Panels, pickets, or chain link fabric are installed.
- Gates are hung, leveled, and hardware is tuned.
- The site is cleaned — no leftover concrete crumbs, no zip ties in the grass.
Step 5: The walkthrough
Before we leave, we walk the finished fence with you, open every gate, and confirm you're happy with the installation. If anything needs a tweak, we handle it on the spot.
Step 6: Warranty
Every Prime Fence installation includes our lifetime workmanship warranty, plus whatever manufacturer warranty comes with the material. If something isn't right down the road, one phone call gets it fixed.
How to prepare
- Move outdoor furniture and planters back from the fence line.
- Mark any sprinkler heads or invisible dog fence wires.
- Confirm your property line if you're unsure — a recent survey removes any doubt.
- Keep pets and kids inside while we're digging.
That's it. No surprises, no hidden fees. If you're ready to see what your project looks like, we're happy to give you a free estimate whenever it's convenient.
