Front-yard fences are generally not allowed in Detroit. The one exception is on corner lots, where a fence up to 3 ft tall may be permitted.
SSide Yard
Side-yard fences are typically limited to 6 ft tall in residential areas, and up to 6 ft at the front face of the house in local historic districts.
BBackyard
Rear-yard fences are typically allowed up to 8 ft tall, both citywide and in historic districts at the rear property line.
Permit Requirements
BSEED's permit guide says fences 7 ft tall or less that are not in a Special Review District are exempt from a building permit, while taller fences and fences in a Special Review District need one. In a local historic district, a permit is required for all exterior work, so check with the Historic District Commission first. Setback Requirements
Front-yard fences are essentially not allowed except on corner lots, and corner lots must keep the sight-triangle clear. No more than two different fence materials are allowed on a single lot.
