Solid or privacy fences are not allowed in the front yard. The only exception is a decorative fence (like split-rail or open picket) under 30 in. tall, no more than 16 ft per section, at least 50% open in any 5 ft stretch, and set at least 3 ft off every property line.
SSide Yard
Up to 72 in. (6 ft) tall. The fence can't start any closer to the street than the front bearing wall of your house. Vinyl-coated chain link is allowed in the side yard.
BBackyard
Up to 72 in. (6 ft) tall, plus an extra 6 in. of open space at the base for lawn maintenance. Board-on-board, shadow-box, and semi-privacy styles are all permitted, and a one-foot lattice top is allowed.
Permit Requirements
Yes — a permit is required before installing any fence. Total fees are $40 application + $25 plan review + $60 zoning permit + a $50 bond returned after a passing inspection. Apply through the Building & Safety Engineering Department.
Setback Requirements
Side and rear fences can't start any closer to the street than the front wall of your house. On corner lots, side-street fencing runs only from the rear building corner to the rear property line.
Notable Ordinance Provisions
The finished side of the fence must face outward toward neighbors. Stockade fences and uncoated chain link are prohibited in residential districts. Wood must be pressure-treated, painted, or stained. No barbed wire, razor wire, or electric fences in residential areas.
