FFront Yard
No fence is allowed in the front yard or anywhere forward of the front of your house. The only exception is a decorative landscape treatment (not chain link) up to 30 in. tall, no more than 40 ft long, placed at least 2 ft off the sidewalk.
SSide Yard
A standard side-yard fence may be up to 4 ft tall. A privacy fence in the side yard may be up to 6 ft 4 in. but cannot extend forward past the back wall of the house, and requires written consent from the adjacent neighbor.
BBackyard
Privacy fences in the rear yard may be up to 6 ft 4 in. tall. Dog runs are allowed in the rear yard only — max 6 ft tall and 200 sq ft.
Permit Requirements
Yes — a zoning permit is required for any fence, and for any re-erecting, altering, relocating, or major repair. For privacy fences you must also submit a signed authorization form from adjacent neighbors. Apply through BS&A Online.
Setback Requirements
No fence may be placed within 2 ft of a side lot line that is next to a neighbor's driveway. At street corners, nothing over 30 in. is allowed within a 25 ft sight-triangle. Posts face inward toward your yard.
Notable Ordinance Provisions
Only one fence is allowed between any two properties — a new privacy fence means the existing one must come down. Barbed wire, razor wire, and electric fences are prohibited, and chain-link fences may not have privacy slats.
