Fences inside the required front-yard setback (and on corner lots, inside the exterior side-yard setback) are limited to 3 ft tall. Nothing over 30 in. inside the corner sight-triangle near intersections.
SSide Yard
Side or rear yard fences may be up to 6 ft tall. They can't extend toward the street any closer than the front wall of the house — or the required front-yard setback — whichever is farther back.
BBackyard
Back-yard fences may be up to 6 ft tall. On lots of 2 acres or more, up to 8 ft is allowed outside the required front-yard setback.
Permit Requirements
Yes — a permit is required before installing any fence that is both taller than 3 ft AND longer than 16 ft. The residential permit costs $100 through the Zoning Division. You'll submit an application with a property survey or site plan.
Setback Requirements
Fences must sit on or inside your property line — not in the public right-of-way (the grass strip between your lot line and the street). On corner lots, the exterior side yard is treated like a second front yard.
