Front-yard fences can be up to 4 ft tall and must be at least 50% open (see-through) when viewed head-on. Remember, the front property line is usually at the edge of the public sidewalk, not the curb.
SSide Yard
Side-yard fences can be up to 6 ft tall and 100% solid; a full privacy fence is allowed.
BBackyard
Rear-yard fences can be up to 8 ft tall and 100% solid. Anything over 7 ft also needs a building permit.
Permit Requirements
Yes. Fences 7 ft or less need a Zoning Compliance Permit from the city's Planning Services, submitted online through the city's STREAM permitting system. Historic-district properties also need a Certificate of Appropriateness, submitted at the same time as or before the zoning permit.
Setback Requirements
There is no minimum setback; your fence can go right up to the property line as long as it's fully on your side. The city does not locate property lines for you; look for corner markers or hire a surveyor.
