Fence Ordinance Overview
FFront Yard
No fence may be installed inside the required front-yard setback area. Outside the setback but still in the front yard, fences up to 4 ft tall are allowed. A low decorative "border" up to 36 in. tall and 25 ft long is allowed without a permit but must be at least 1 ft off any public walkway and cannot be chain link or wire.
SSide Yard
Side-yard fences may be up to 4 ft tall throughout, or up to 6 ft if the fence stays at least 15 ft behind the front corner of the house on that side.
BBackyard
Rear-yard fences may be up to 6 ft tall. The fence must have a finished appearance on both sides — the better-looking side faces the neighbor.
Permit Requirements
Yes — a compliance application through Building & Inspection Services is required before installation. Your application must include a survey showing the fence location relative to lot lines, buildings, driveways, and adjacent fences, plus the fence design (panel type, posts, height). Apply at 1150 S. Canton Center Rd.
Setback Requirements
No fence inside the required front-yard setback. You may build right on the property line only with written consent from your neighbor, and you must still maintain the space between the fence and the lot line.
Notable Ordinance Provisions
Mesh or slat inserts on chain-link fences are prohibited. Fences must be uniformly painted, stained, or treated and kept in good repair. No barbed wire and no above-ground electric fences in residential zones. Fences in floodplains, wetlands, or drainage easements need special approval.
HOA Considerations
A township permit does not override your HOA's master deed, bylaws, or covenants — the Township explicitly won't be liable for permits that conflict with HOA rules. Check yours first.
