FFront Yard
No constructed fence or wall may go ahead of the front of the house. The exceptions are fences up to 48 in. on recorded lots over 2 acres with at least 200 ft of frontage, and fences up to 6 1/2 ft on certain double-frontage or corner lots where the back or side of the house faces Eight Mile, Beck, Taft, Novi, or Seven Mile/Edward Hines Drive.
SSide Yard
Side-yard fences located at least 10 ft behind the front face of the house may be up to 6 1/2 ft tall. Closer than 10 ft to the front face of the house, side-yard fences are limited to 48 in. Posts and finials may extend up to 6 in. above the maximum height.
BBackyard
Rear-yard fences may be up to 6 1/2 ft tall, with posts and finials allowed up to 6 in. above that. Swimming pool fences must meet the State Construction Code.
Permit Requirements
Yes. The City of Northville requires a permit from the City Building Official before any fence or wall is built or altered. The application includes a sketch of the property showing where the fence will go and a description of the fence type and height. Permit fees are set by the City Council, and Prime Fence handles the permit for you.
Setback Requirements
Fences go on the lot line unless underground utilities interfere, with posts and footings kept inside your property. Fences must be at least 1 ft from any public sidewalk or right-of-way line, meet the city's corner clear-vision rules, and not block drainage. The city does not determine where your lot lines are.

The finished side must face neighboring properties, with support posts on the inside. Barbed wire, electric fences, and wire fences (including chicken wire) are prohibited in residential districts, while underground pet fences are allowed.
