Garden City is a compact residential city in western Wayne County with mostly single-family homes on modest lots, so careful fence placement and good neighbor coordination matter.
Garden City homes sit on compact lots where a fence has to do a lot: give you privacy, keep kids and pets in the yard, and still respect the neighbor's driveway and the shared property line. Prime Fence plans each layout around those limits.
We install vinyl, wood, aluminum, chain link, composite, pool, and garden fencing, plus walk and drive gates. We help you compare upkeep, privacy, and appearance in Michigan weather before you decide.
Prime Fence handles new installation, repair, and removal of old fencing in Garden City. Every new fence installation is backed by our transferable lifetime workmanship warranty.
Before work starts, the city needs a zoning permit with site drawings, and a post-hole inspection happens before the final inspection. Call MISS DIG at 811 before any digging so underground utilities are marked.
From premium materials to expert installation, we offer everything you need for the perfect fence.
Prime Fence installs and repairs fences for Garden City homeowners with the same craftsmanship, clear pricing, and lifetime workmanship warranty we bring to every job across southeast Michigan. We treat every Garden City yard like it's our own, from the first measurement to the last panel.
Garden City's smaller lots leave little room for error, so we pay close attention to property lines, existing fences, and the city's post-depth and placement rules. Whether you want a wood or vinyl privacy fence for the backyard, an aluminum fence for a clean look, or chain link to keep pets in, we help you choose the right material and handle the zoning permit paperwork.

Understanding local fence regulations is essential for a smooth installation. Here's what you need to know about fencing in Garden City.
Fences are not allowed forward of the front line of the house. A low border treatment, such as a split rail or picket, up to 30 in. tall may be placed in any yard without a permit if it sits at least 2 ft from sidewalks and driveways and at least 1 ft from lot lines.
A fence up to 4 ft tall is allowed in the side yard but may not extend past the front line of the house. A 6 ft fence may extend from the rear yard into the side yard up to 2 ft beyond an existing side door, or to no closer than 10 ft from the front line of the house.
Rear-yard fences may be up to 6 ft tall. On corner lots, a fence along the street-side lot line must stay at least 1 ft from the edge of the sidewalk (or on the lot line if there is no sidewalk), and a 10 ft clear vision area is required.
Yes. A zoning permit from the Building Department is required before any fence is built. The application needs two site drawings plus a digital copy showing property lines, buildings, the fence type, height and material, existing fences, nearby driveways and sidewalks, and post-hole depth. A post-hole inspection is required before the final inspection, and building before the permit is issued doubles the fee.
Fences must sit entirely on your own property unless you and your neighbor apply jointly for a fence on the shared line. Posts must be set at least 3 ft deep and encased in concrete. The Building Official may require a fence to be set back up to 2 ft from a driveway or property line for safe passage, and may require a licensed survey if lot lines can't be located.
The finished side of the fence must face outward unless the neighbor waives it in writing. A new fence may not attach to or touch a neighbor's fence without written agreement from both owners, and no more than 3 in. is allowed between fences. The city also notes that removing an existing chain link fence requires your neighbor's written approval. Razor wire and electric fences are prohibited.
Some neighborhoods have deed restrictions or association rules that are stricter than city code. Check yours before you apply.

Yes. Garden City requires a zoning permit from the Building Department before a fence is built. The application includes site drawings showing property lines, the fence location and height, nearby driveways and sidewalks, and post-hole depth. Prime Fence can prepare and submit it for you.
Rear-yard fences may be up to 6 ft, and side-yard fences up to 4 ft that stop at the front line of the house. A 6 ft fence can extend partway into the side yard under specific rules, and fences are not allowed in front of the house. Confirm the details for your lot with the Building Department.
It depends on the size of the job, permit approval, any neighbor approvals, material availability, and weather. We will talk through timing with you when we give your free estimate.
