FFront Yard
Only open decorative fences are allowed in the front yard — under 30 in. tall, set at least 3 ft off any property line or sidewalk, and at least 50% open in every 5 ft section.
SSide Yard
Up to 6 ft tall. The fence can't start any closer to the street than the front wall of the house. Chain-link is limited to 4 ft in all residential areas.
BBackyard
Up to 6 ft tall (plus an optional 6 in. gap at the base for maintenance). Chain-link is still capped at 4 ft. Where your yard borders a park, school, parking lot, or commercial property, up to 6 ft is allowed along that line.
Permit Requirements
Yes — a zoning permit through the Building & Engineering Department is required before any work begins. You'll submit an application, plot plan, blueprint-quality drawings showing posts and materials, contractor info, and written owner consent. Starting without a permit doubles the fee and adds a $100 fine.
Setback Requirements
Fences must stay behind the front bearing wall of the house. Within 25 ft of an intersection or 10 ft of a driveway, nothing over 30 in. tall — landscaping included — is allowed.
Notable Ordinance Provisions
All fence posts must be set in concrete at least 3 ft deep. The finished side faces outward. You cannot join two separate fences to create one barrier. Barbed wire is allowed only in heavy industrial zones on tall fences, and no electric fences anywhere.
