Fence Installation and Repair in Northville Township

Because Northville Township limits how tall and how solid a fence can be on most lots, the right design matters as much as the material. Prime Fence helps you pick an open, code-friendly style that still does the job.

We install aluminum, wood, vinyl, composite, pool, and garden fencing, plus walk and drive gates, and we recommend styles that meet the township's openness rules. Chain link is not permitted on residential lots in the township.

Prime Fence handles new installation, repair, and removal of old fencing in Northville Township. Every new fence installation is backed by our transferable lifetime workmanship warranty.

Check your lot size, HOA covenants, and property lines first, then apply for the zoning compliance permit. Call MISS DIG at 811 before any digging so underground utilities are marked.

Northville Township Fence Ordinances & Permits

Understanding local fence regulations is essential for a smooth installation. Here's what you need to know about fencing in Northville Township.

Fence Ordinance Overview

F
Front Yard

On lots of 2 acres or less, front-yard fences are limited to 36 in. tall, in sections no longer than 20 ft, at least 10 ft apart, totaling no more than 100 ft, and no more than 50% solid. On lots over 2 acres, fences along a road are limited to 4 ft (54 in. with decorative toppers), must be at least 75% open, and may not sit in the required front-yard setback.

S
Side Yard

On lots of 2 acres or less, side-yard fences are limited to 4 ft, or 54 in. including decorative toppers, and must be at least 50% open.

B
Backyard

Rear-yard fences on lots of 2 acres or less follow the same 4 ft limit. On lots over 2 acres, fences that do not abut a road may be up to 6 ft and must be at least 50% open. Around a patio, a privacy screen up to 5 ft tall is allowed on up to two sides, within 16 ft of the rear building line and outside the required side yard.

Permit Requirements

Yes, for most fences. Fences over 36 in. and up to 7 ft need a zoning compliance permit, and fences over 7 ft need a building permit. Short decorative landscape fences 36 in. or under that meet the section-length limits do not need a permit. The township's fence checklist asks for the application, two sets of plans and a site plan, a photo or drawing of the fence, the signed contract, and the contractor's license if applicable, with post-hole and final inspections scheduled through BS&A.

Setback Requirements

The finished side of the fence must face the neighboring lot, road, or easement. On larger lots, road-facing fences must stay out of the required front-yard setback. Confirm the setbacks for your zoning district with the township before you build.

Notable Ordinance Provisions

Chain link is not permitted on residential lots; the township allows only vinyl-coated black or dark green chain link in one industrial district. Barbed wire and electric fences are not allowed. On most lots, open styles such as aluminum, picket, or split rail fit the rules best.

HOA Considerations

A township permit does not override subdivision covenants or deed restrictions, and the township does not enforce them. Check your HOA rules before you apply.
